Vetiver oil is among the most geographically concentrated essential oils in global trade. More than half the world's supply originates from a single country — Haiti — a nation whose supply chain has been repeatedly disrupted by gang violence, political collapse, and natural disaster. The 2021 supply stoppage drove global price spikes across the fine fragrance sector. The structural conditions that caused it have not changed. In 2025, US import tariffs added a new layer of cost pressure. The spread between what a farmer receives and what a buyer pays runs to multiples that would renegotiate every procurement contract in this room — if buyers knew it existed.

Study 1 — Global Supply Concentration

Vetiver's geographic concentration is one of the most extreme in the essential oils category. The risk is not theoretical — it has materialised twice in the past decade. India is the fastest-growing origin and the only credible commercial-scale alternative.

Origin CountryEstimated Global Supply ShareShare / Risk
Haiti
54% — CRITICAL supply risk
India
22% — Growing at 11.2% CAGR
Indonesia

Study 2 — Haiti Risk Scorecard

The fragility of Haitian vetiver supply is multi-dimensional. Political instability is the headline — but the risk stack runs deeper, from farmer economics to US tariff exposure introduced in 2025. Stability scored 1 (worst) to 5 (fully stable).

Risk FactorStability Score (●●●●● = fully stable)
Political Stability — gang violence controls export corridors●○○○○
Logistics Reliability — port access intermittent●●○○○
US Tariff Exposure — 2025 tariffs elevated import cost●●○○○
Farmer Price Security — 90% earn under $2/day●○○○○
Harvest Consistency — erratic rainfall causing 15–30% yield loss●●○○○
Quality Traceability — blockchain pilots underway, low coverage●●●○○
Supply Volume Trend — NGO support fragile vs structural instability●●●○○

Study 3 — The Price Chain (Multiples, Not Dollar Values)

The spread between what a farmer earns at the root level and what a buyer pays at the formula level runs to multiples that would renegotiate every procurement contract in the room. Understanding where you sit in this chain is the first step to understanding where your margin goes.

Supply Chain StageValue Multiple vs Farm GateIndicative Multiple
Farmer — root cultivation & harvest

Distiller — extraction & crude oil

Study 4 — Haiti vs India: Buyer's Comparison

Indian vetiver is no longer an emergency substitute — it is a documented, scalable, tariff-advantaged option for most non-luxury applications. The buyers who establish dual-origin supply lines now will have both resilience and margin flexibility that single-source competitors cannot match.

Analyst Note

Vetiver is not a commodity. It is a category-defining ingredient whose supply structure has a single point of failure that the industry has tolerated for decades because the oil is extraordinary and the alternative was unclear. That calculus is shifting. Indian vetiver is no longer an emergency substitute — it is a documented, scalable, tariff-advantaged option for most non-luxury applications. The buyers and traders who establish dual-origin supply lines now — Haiti for luxury fine fragrance and India for everything else — will have both resilience and margin flexibility that single-source competitors cannot match.
