Nagarmotha (Cyperus scariosus) is a wetland sedge native to Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan whose dried rhizomes yield an essential oil with a cold, smoky, woody-leathery character that occupies its own precise territory in the natural fragrance palette. It is darker and more leathery than vetiver, less sweet and complex than oud, with a cold mineral smokiness unique to the genus. India is the only significant commercial producer. The oil carries no CITES restriction and no sustainability risk. It has been used in fine fragrance formulations by Givenchy, Tom Ford, Diptyque, Frederic Malle, Amouage, Burberry, and Guerlain. And most operators in this community are not yet using it to its full commercial potential.

Study 1 — Botanical Identity & Production

Nagarmotha occupies a uniquely Indian territory in natural fragrance. Despite significant demand from European and Middle Eastern perfume houses, the entire global commercial supply originates from a single country. The oil is steam-distilled from dried, ground rhizomes of Cyperus scariosus — a plant related botanically to Cyperus papyrus, the ancient Egyptian paper plant.

Study 2 — Chemical Profile

Nagarmotha's profile is dominated by cyperene sesquiterpenes and cyperotundone — a compound unique to the Cyperus genus and the primary source of the oil's cold, smoky-leathery character. GC-MS identification of cyperene at commercial levels is the authentication marker for genuine Cyperus scariosus.

Study 3 — The Luxury Fragrance Credential

Eight verified deployments across four decades — from Givenchy in 1986 through Tom Ford Oud Voyager and Guerlain Vetiver Fauve in 2025. Tom Ford's 2025 deployment used nagarmotha in large doses as the dominant character note, specifically as an oud alternative. Every F&F house watching Tom Ford's ingredient choices took note.

Study 4 — Buyer Positioning by Segment

Nagarmotha serves multiple buyer segments simultaneously. Fine fragrance and oud-alternative applications are the highest-fit categories. The ingredient's India-only exclusivity and eight luxury credentials are the correct leads for every segment.

Analyst Note

Nagarmotha is the most undervalued Indian essential oil in the fine fragrance trade relative to its commercial credentials. Eight verified luxury deployments. India sole producer. No CITES risk. Competitive pricing at $45-70/kg international B2B. Growing in every direction simultaneously — natural perfumery, Bakhoor, oud-alternative formulation, luxury personal care. The operators who establish credentialed, GC-MS documented, batch-traceable nagarmotha supply relationships with European and Middle Eastern buyers in 2026 are building supply chain positions that will be difficult to displace as the ingredient's profile in premium formulation continues to grow.
